Discovering the Intangible

Kokeshi

Wakana Sugesawa・ Nozomi Kawamoto・Miyu Rinzaki・Yasuko Itoi

This past year, we have avoided meeting people and being intimate with them. People's existence has been perceived only in terms of numbers.

This work, "Kokeshi," is a participatory work in which visitors create their own kokeshi dolls. On the last day of the exhibition, we will burn them at the temple.

The birth of Kokeshi dolls dates back to the Heian period (AD 794-1185), but it is said that they became popular around the middle of the Edo period (AD 1603-1868) as souvenirs and good luck charms for the children and grandchildren of hot springs visitors. On the other hand, as time went by, people have come to have a both fearful and cute image of kokeshi dolls.

By observing Kokeshi dolls lined up in a row and burning, we hope you can experience something more than just numbers.

This page will show how the number of 3D Kokeshi dolls increases according to the number of views per day. We hope you will experience the web version of "Kokeshi."
